The Ministry of Medium Machines

Selected work by Marat Paransky

The Ministry of Medium Machines comprises hand-made, found, and modified objects and images born out of artist Marat Paransky's vision of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Utilizing materials that are specific to nuclear emergencies and human health, Paransky has created a mixed-media installation of photographs, paintings, sculptures, collages and an archive of books/articles that function as a museum of sorts, inviting viewers to explore the cataclysmic accident as a historical event, a cultural construct, and a personal experience. Consciously built on second-hand memories, the artworks are meant to be experienced as one whole, discouraging the typical black-and-white thinking plaguing the debate on nuclear energy and playing instead on the myths and uncertainty that surround it.
