In Between Presence and Absence
Sun Young Kang explores the dualities of human existence, such as life and death, material and immaterial, and presence and absence. Through installations and intimate books, she creates physical and metaphorical spaces where audiences become active participants, completing the experience. Born in Korea and now based in the U.S., Kang navigates the cultural boundary between two worlds, finding resonance in the space that divides and connects them. Her minimalist and repetitive visual language symbolizes the passage of time, transforming intangible concepts into spatial experiences. Using paper-cast vessels made from discarded materials, In Between Presence and Absence articulates the essence of emptiness. By suspending these inverted vessels from the ceiling, the installation transforms the space into one filled with absence, prompting viewers to feel the weight of the intangible. This work challenges perceptions of presence and absence, inviting contemplation of the unseen and the inseparable connection between the material and immaterial.
