I AM: Assuming Positions
I AM: Assuming Positions explores the fluidity, vulnerability, and power dynamics inherent in identity—particularly as they relate to gender, relationships, and the gaze. Featuring works that challenge societal expectations and historical representations, this exhibition creates space for dialogue about how bodies are seen, performed, and experienced. The artists included in Assuming Positions use photography, performance, sculpture, and installation to confront deeply ingrained social constructs, offering alternative perspectives that disrupt traditional narratives and demand critical engagement. Cassils pushes the body's limits as both medium and site of resistance. In Becoming An Image, their physicality and force collide with material and space, revealing an ever-evolving transformation that defies fixed definitions of gender. Miller & Shellabarger's profoundly intimate and durational performances document the rhythms of queer relationships, illustrating the tension between visibility and invisibility, connection and isolation. Stafford Hiroshi Smith's P.O.V. reverses the dominant male gaze, placing nude photographers—historically the unseen observers—under scrutiny, challenging the power structures embedded in image-making. These works interrogate the intersections of gender, sexuality, and agency, compelling viewers to reconsider how identities are formed, represented, and perceived. I AM: Assuming Positions is a provocation—an invitation to confront and question how we navigate, define, and assert our presence in the world.
