Society of Spectacle
Are we under the influence of spectacular images and experiences? What becomes of our memories in a world inundated by media-driven simulations? Do you genuinely recall the actual experience, or are your perceptions mediated by the layers of imagery that distort, fragment, and reframe it? In Society of Spectacle, six artists interrogate how we passively consume, commodify, and navigate our increasingly intangible realities. Through their diverse practices—from installation and video art to performance and digital media—they expose the interplay between authenticity and artifice in an age of hyperconnectivity, curated aesthetics, and ephemeral pleasures. This exhibition invites viewers to question the social mechanisms that turn lived experiences into mere appearances, mirroring the artificial realities we have collectively embraced. Jonathan Brilliant's architectural installations embody the fragility of constructed systems, while Liss LaFleur uses experimental video and digital storytelling to explore identity and the spectacle of representation. Le'Andra LeSeur examines the accumulation of shared emotional and cultural experiences through meditative multimedia works that engage the body and memory. Zane Miller and Jonathan Naccarato deconstruct the manipulation of time and space in their works, juxtaposing the infinite scroll of digital culture with moments of stillness and introspection. Eva Rocha's immersive installations critique the exploitation of the human form in both digital and historical contexts, asking viewers to consider their participation in the spectacle. At its core, Society of Spectacle questions how the relentless creation and consumption of images distort our sense of self, time, and community. Is the spectacle merely an escape, or is it a force that erodes our ability to engage with reality? Visitors are challenged to actively participate—either setting aside the artifice for authenticity or contributing to the ever-growing image bank. Ultimately, the choice is yours: step outside the spectacle or embrace the shimmering, seductive illusion it offers.
