Double Take
David Heo
website
David Heo is a multidisciplinary artist whose idiosyncratic style masterfully blends painting, collage, and symbolic storytelling. Drawing inspiration from ancient Western mythologies, hyper-saturated 90s animation, and the dualities of hybrid culture, Heo crafts vibrant narratives that explore the harmonies and tensions of identity. In this exhibition, Heo'sHeo's recent works delve into the fragmented interplay between Korean cultural concepts such as Han (한)—a deep emotional resonance of sorrow—and Jeong (정)—a profound sense of connection. As a Korean-American, Heo views these beliefs as inherently intertwined, creating a liminal space between representation and abstraction. Through a bold deconstructivist approach, Heo'sHeo's works offer disjointed yet deeply personal narratives that reflect the Asian-American experience. By reinterpreting American popular culture, Western art history, and South Korean iconography, Heo creates a cross-pollination of ideas that invite viewers to reflect on identity, belonging, and cultural intersections. This collection features 30 works on paper, including the collage series A Timeline to Heavier Talks (#1–5), which revisits moments of camaraderie and fragility through the lens of the traditional Korean drinking game Bottlecap. Fresh from his residency in Seoul, Heo's visual autobiography illuminates the universal themes of humanity, nostalgia, and cultural hybridity.
